Pilots Use Checklists. Why Don't Worship Teams?
00:00:32:21 - 00:00:35:03
We're going to get nerdy here.
00:00:35:03 - 00:00:37:21
Maybe. Maybe not.
00:00:37:21 - 00:00:40:21
Let's talk about pre-service checklists.
00:00:41:18 - 00:00:42:09
Where are you?
00:00:42:09 - 00:00:42:21
Where are you going?
00:00:42:21 - 00:00:44:03
You're leaving already?
00:00:44:03 - 00:00:47:03
Oh, we got his shorts on camera.
00:00:47:12 - 00:00:49:05
Dude, we got to go tan. We gotta go.
00:00:51:08 - 00:00:51:12
I know.
00:00:51:12 - 00:00:53:07
I got my short gym shorts on.
00:00:53:07 - 00:00:56:03
I'm doing you a favor
by putting my phone away.
00:00:56:03 - 00:00:59:03
I actually really appreciated that.
00:01:00:00 - 00:01:03:00
I don't think churches are.
00:01:04:00 - 00:01:07:13
Documenting really much of,
like, weekend process.
00:01:07:20 - 00:01:10:20
How much are you seeing of that?
00:01:12:01 - 00:01:12:22
Re ask that question.
00:01:12:22 - 00:01:14:10
You don't think churches are documenting.
00:01:14:10 - 00:01:16:10
We aren’t
really documenting our processes?
00:01:16:10 - 00:01:17:21
Oh, right right right right.
00:01:17:21 - 00:01:20:10
Yeah yeah yeah yeah. No not a chance.
00:01:20:10 - 00:01:22:07
It's not happening. There's some.
00:01:22:07 - 00:01:25:03
Yeah there's some those
that are like the more process oriented.
00:01:25:03 - 00:01:26:18
Yeah. Yeah.
00:01:26:18 - 00:01:29:17
But more often than I find it's, it's
just like
00:01:29:17 - 00:01:32:19
the process is in our heads as leaders.
00:01:32:19 - 00:01:36:08
We tell people we either do it
before people show up into the room,
00:01:36:09 - 00:01:40:13
whether the process is to turn on PJs or,
you know,
00:01:41:10 - 00:01:44:05
get front of house, show file loaded.
00:01:44:05 - 00:01:46:11
Yeah, patch sheet, whatever.
00:01:46:11 - 00:01:48:12
Like every, every church
is going to have their own processes.
00:01:48:12 - 00:01:53:10
But it seems like these we just kind of
have those key volunteers that know
00:01:54:03 - 00:01:57:13
and then those that don't, we just kind of
fill in the gaps when needed.
00:01:58:06 - 00:02:02:22
And so I'd love to talk about this
will be more of a tactical discussion.
00:02:03:03 - 00:02:07:02
For those of you listening,
might get a little geeky, but like,
00:02:08:07 - 00:02:09:17
yeah, how should we
00:02:09:17 - 00:02:13:12
how should we be thinking about these
like pre-service checklists?
00:02:13:17 - 00:02:17:15
The the tasks that need to get done
before the weekend happens?
00:02:18:14 - 00:02:22:14
Probably aren't going to get into like,
every single role.
00:02:22:15 - 00:02:24:08
Like to to that level.
00:02:24:08 - 00:02:27:01
Because frankly,
you and I aren't lighting guys.
00:02:27:01 - 00:02:30:13
We shouldn't be telling lighting people
what to do before service, right?
00:02:30:14 - 00:02:35:00
More like how to administer
and plan out these systems.
00:02:35:02 - 00:02:36:11
Yeah, right.
00:02:36:11 - 00:02:39:11
Well yes.
00:02:39:17 - 00:02:42:20
The, the the win though would be that
people would understand
00:02:42:20 - 00:02:46:00
why they are needed versus
then just doing it.
00:02:46:01 - 00:02:46:13
Yeah. Right.
00:02:46:13 - 00:02:49:12
So it's like why
why would a lighting engineer.
00:02:49:12 - 00:02:52:09
Designer. Lighting op. Yeah.
00:02:52:09 - 00:02:53:21
Volunteer. Part time. Staff.
00:02:53:21 - 00:02:55:03
Doesn't matter. Intern.
00:02:55:03 - 00:02:57:12
Why do I need a checklist? Yeah. What?
00:02:57:12 - 00:02:58:06
What does it matter?
00:02:58:06 - 00:03:01:02
Why does a stage manager.
00:03:01:02 - 00:03:02:06
Why does a worship leader.
00:03:02:06 - 00:03:04:07
Why does a audio engineer.
00:03:04:07 - 00:03:05:22
Why do we need the checklist?
00:03:05:22 - 00:03:08:10
If you can't get them to understand
the why?
00:03:08:10 - 00:03:12:10
Never in a chance would someone add
an extra task to their plate.
00:03:12:19 - 00:03:15:12
Right. I'm thankful
00:03:16:20 - 00:03:18:00
that sometimes I
00:03:18:00 - 00:03:21:09
hear my pilots on my plane
come across and go,
00:03:21:18 - 00:03:24:04
hey, we're just tied up a little bit
on some paperwork
00:03:24:04 - 00:03:26:22
and going through our checklist
before we take off.
00:03:26:22 - 00:03:29:01
Because they understand the why.
00:03:29:01 - 00:03:32:15
Because it's like as a pilot sits down
and they look through all of
00:03:32:15 - 00:03:36:04
their checklist to make sure that plane
they've flown four times that day.
00:03:36:16 - 00:03:38:12
They got to restart every time.
00:03:38:12 - 00:03:40:01
Right. So.
00:03:40:01 - 00:03:41:16
And that can feel mundane to some.
00:03:41:16 - 00:03:43:21
They're like
oh I'm better than a checklist. Yeah.
00:03:43:21 - 00:03:46:09
It sounds
it sounds like monkey work. Of course.
00:03:46:09 - 00:03:47:15
Of course it's it's this podcast.
00:03:47:15 - 00:03:50:21
We know that Hayden's got to turn on
cameras, make sure everything's set up.
00:03:50:21 - 00:03:52:02
The lighting looks well.
00:03:52:02 - 00:03:54:11
It's mundane, like it's it's routine.
00:03:54:11 - 00:03:58:09
It's what we do in our roles and our jobs
and when we volunteer.
00:03:58:15 - 00:04:01:03
So it's it's it's,
and I do it every Sunday.
00:04:02:17 - 00:04:07:00
But having one is only a
00:04:07:07 - 00:04:11:22
major help and resource
to making sure that nothing is missed.
00:04:11:23 - 00:04:13:18
Yeah.
And what is wrong with that? Yeah. Well.
00:04:13:18 - 00:04:17:10
And how often in this community
are we talking about lynch pins?
00:04:17:20 - 00:04:21:15
I can't take a vacation,
my volunteers just don't.
00:04:21:17 - 00:04:23:13
I can't rely on them.
00:04:23:13 - 00:04:26:13
You know, we can go down the line.
That is.
00:04:26:19 - 00:04:29:22
I don't want to sound dramatic,
but that that does tend to be
00:04:30:11 - 00:04:33:10
a headline in our community. Yeah, right.
00:04:33:11 - 00:04:37:16
And so how do we combat that vicious cycle
00:04:39:06 - 00:04:43:17
through processes and like, dare
I say, some documentation?
00:04:43:19 - 00:04:46:19
Yeah. And clarity for our volunteers.
00:04:46:19 - 00:04:48:21
But yeah, I think you're right.
They have to understand the why.
00:04:48:21 - 00:04:50:17
Well,
we as leaders need to understand the why.
00:04:50:17 - 00:04:52:11
I think that's actually
the bigger issue here is
00:04:52:11 - 00:04:54:21
like we as leaders need to understand
why this is so important.
00:04:54:21 - 00:04:59:07
Then also volunteers need to understand
like because sometimes maybe people like,
00:04:59:08 - 00:05:02:13
yeah, I do have systems, but my volunteers
are resistant to the systems.
00:05:02:14 - 00:05:06:04
It it might be some work
up front, but it only makes
00:05:07:08 - 00:05:08:16
your role
00:05:08:16 - 00:05:11:16
and responsibilities
as a leader or a key OP.
00:05:11:17 - 00:05:12:03
Yeah.
00:05:12:03 - 00:05:15:03
And I hate to use the word easy,
but easier.
00:05:15:03 - 00:05:20:19
Because if I'm sitting down
and my as a worship leader
00:05:20:19 - 00:05:24:22
or someone that maybe be in leading a team
or in charge over
00:05:24:23 - 00:05:29:01
production, worship, creative, whatever,
and I get a text message from a pastor
00:05:29:01 - 00:05:32:12
or pastors assistant and says, “Hey,
we misspelled
00:05:33:21 - 00:05:35:13
Galatians.”
00:05:35:13 - 00:05:38:13
Well, I'm like, well,
that could have been prevented.
00:05:38:13 - 00:05:41:21
Only if my ProPresenter op had a checklist
that said, please,
00:05:41:21 - 00:05:45:20
before we go into service – before doors –
make sure all the lyrics are spelled
00:05:45:21 - 00:05:47:18
correctly
and all the Pastor’s slides are spelled
00:05:47:18 - 00:05:50:18
correctly on a checklist
that he's or she's going to check.
00:05:51:01 - 00:05:53:01
Yeah. So I know immediately.
00:05:53:01 - 00:05:54:14
Well how in the world
did we misspell Galatians?
00:05:55:21 - 00:05:57:02
We have a checklist.
00:05:57:02 - 00:05:59:12
I'm going to go back to that checklist
that that volunteer
00:05:59:12 - 00:06:00:04
would have checked off.
00:06:00:04 - 00:06:01:10
Can you spell Galatians really by the way?
00:06:01:10 - 00:06:04:10
G A L A T I A N S.
00:06:05:10 - 00:06:06:19
Okay, cool. I just want to make sure.
00:06:06:19 - 00:06:08:18
We were talking about reading our Bibles
before this.
00:06:08:18 - 00:06:09:16
I want to make sure you actually.
00:06:09:16 - 00:06:09:20
Yeah.
00:06:09:20 - 00:06:12:20
Well,
I wasn't talking about me reading my Bible
00:06:13:06 - 00:06:16:17
and but so I'm gonna go back to check list
and go,
00:06:16:18 - 00:06:19:17
oh, well,
that they actually didn't check that box.
00:06:19:17 - 00:06:19:22
Yeah.
00:06:19:22 - 00:06:24:15
So I know for a fact
no one checked to make sure. Job.
00:06:25:19 - 00:06:28:19
Job. Can you spell Job?
00:06:29:12 - 00:06:31:01
Was spelled correctly, right?
00:06:31:01 - 00:06:32:07
So. Yeah.
00:06:32:07 - 00:06:33:23
Yeah. That's.
00:06:33:23 - 00:06:36:06
It sounds so mundane, but we.
00:06:36:06 - 00:06:38:23
I just talked to a pastor
this morning. He was like,
00:06:40:04 - 00:06:40:08
dude,
00:06:40:08 - 00:06:43:09
we just had a train wreck of a weekend,
and it wasn't like
00:06:43:09 - 00:06:47:12
the power went out or the ceiling
fell through, you know, like that.
00:06:47:12 - 00:06:50:12
What do we think of, like, train wrecks
or like something really bad happened?
00:06:50:12 - 00:06:55:03
No, it's just little stuff like you
just like you just described,
00:06:55:04 - 00:07:00:02
like slides, spelling errors,
like so-and-so didn't show up.
00:07:00:03 - 00:07:00:10
Yeah.
00:07:00:10 - 00:07:05:08
And this thing happened, like,
all these very avoidable mistakes.
00:07:05:09 - 00:07:07:22
Yeah. He's like. And that's
what was most frustrating. Yeah.
00:07:07:22 - 00:07:11:02
And on practical again
like on a checklist like lighting.
00:07:11:07 - 00:07:14:02
So what. Okay. So what checklist
would you guys put on for a lighting guy.
00:07:14:02 - 00:07:16:21
We're not lighting guys
so we can't speak into lighting guys.
00:07:16:21 - 00:07:22:11
I would say have you connected
with whoever chooses the worship
00:07:22:11 - 00:07:27:13
backgrounds to make sure that your lights
and worship colors are matching?
00:07:27:14 - 00:07:28:19
Yeah. Before doors.
00:07:28:19 - 00:07:30:02
Yeah. Like, how hard is it?
00:07:30:02 - 00:07:33:23
Because as a designer, I could sit down
and go, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom boom.
00:07:33:23 - 00:07:35:18
Punch out all this,
punch this out, punch that out.
00:07:35:18 - 00:07:38:05
And it looks great
from the lighting standpoint. But then,
00:07:39:05 - 00:07:42:01
you know, Resolume or ProPresenter
or D3 whatever you got.
00:07:42:01 - 00:07:45:08
They’re throwing up an orange background
and you're shooting for a purple
00:07:45:08 - 00:07:46:04
or whatever.
00:07:46:04 - 00:07:48:06
Orange purple is actually not a bad
look together, but you know what I mean?
00:07:48:06 - 00:07:50:03
Like just we're not lined up.
00:07:50:03 - 00:07:51:23
That's an easy checklist thing, right?
00:07:51:23 - 00:07:55:11
Do all your front wash fixtures work
or you dialed in, are your gobos focused?
00:07:56:05 - 00:07:57:00
This. That. This.
00:07:57:00 - 00:07:58:14
You know what? What what? Yeah.
00:07:58:14 - 00:07:59:04
Doesn’t hurt!
00:07:59:04 - 00:08:02:04
Let's not let's not forget
that checklists can help you
00:08:03:20 - 00:08:07:04
build and maintain culture as well.
00:08:07:04 - 00:08:11:19
So for a front of house
audio guy on that checklist, for me
00:08:11:19 - 00:08:16:07
it would be like make sure you've greeted
everybody in on stage.
00:08:16:19 - 00:08:20:17
Like go up, walk in front of them
like say hey, meet new people like.
00:08:20:18 - 00:08:24:17
So these could even be people
oriented tasks that need to happen
00:08:24:18 - 00:08:28:19
because sometimes we're just thinking,
oh yeah, I gotta patch sheet label,
00:08:28:23 - 00:08:33:00
label channels on my show file,
whatever it may be in your environment.
00:08:33:00 - 00:08:35:20
But we forget even about the people stuff
00:08:35:20 - 00:08:40:05
sometimes on our checklist for producers,
it's like coordination
00:08:40:05 - 00:08:45:04
with with ushers, right about doors
or whatever.
00:08:45:04 - 00:08:48:09
It's coordination with,
00:08:48:09 - 00:08:52:01
you know, pastor for backstage manager,
maybe like there's there's
00:08:52:02 - 00:08:56:03
all of these communication points
that need to happen on the weekend
00:08:56:03 - 00:08:59:03
to, oh, I forgot to have that conversation
with so-and-so.
00:08:59:04 - 00:08:59:21
Yeah.
00:08:59:21 - 00:09:01:17
These things are easy to document.
00:09:01:17 - 00:09:03:22
They happen every single weekend.
00:09:03:22 - 00:09:07:14
And so let's talk about like, leaders
for a second.
00:09:07:14 - 00:09:10:11
Because leader listening to this,
00:09:10:11 - 00:09:12:23
you can already imagine all the various
things that need to get done
00:09:12:23 - 00:09:14:15
for the serve positions
that you have on the weekend.
00:09:14:15 - 00:09:15:22
But like, what about for our leaders?
00:09:15:22 - 00:09:18:10
What's on their checklist for the weekend?
00:09:18:10 - 00:09:19:22
Something that I've
00:09:19:22 - 00:09:24:02
become really passionate about lately
because I was assuming this was obvious,
00:09:24:02 - 00:09:28:00
but I'm seeing it more
and more as I'm helping churches.
00:09:28:01 - 00:09:28:14
Like,
00:09:29:14 - 00:09:30:12
why are
00:09:30:12 - 00:09:33:12
why are we not praying before rehearsal?
00:09:34:09 - 00:09:36:06
And they're like, I'm
not going to put prayer on a checklist.
00:09:36:06 - 00:09:39:01
It's like, well,
you keep forgetting to do it.
00:09:39:01 - 00:09:41:06
Yeah. Why are you not
why are we not doing it?
00:09:41:06 - 00:09:44:23
Like and maybe it's
not like an issue of faithfulness,
00:09:44:23 - 00:09:46:13
but it is this forgetfulness.
00:09:46:13 - 00:09:48:10
You're like,
oh, I just got caught up in the thing.
00:09:48:10 - 00:09:51:11
And so I forgot to lead our team through
a time of prayer before we rehearse
00:09:51:11 - 00:09:54:11
together.
00:09:55:06 - 00:09:56:16
Is that crazy to say?
00:09:56:16 - 00:09:59:16
Yeah, it really is.
00:10:00:05 - 00:10:00:14
Yeah.
00:10:00:14 - 00:10:02:17
Like,
how dare we put prayer on a checklist?
00:10:02:17 - 00:10:04:07
I don't know,
but I'm just thinking for the leader.
00:10:04:07 - 00:10:07:16
Like we're forgetting some of the things
that we were responsible for on a weekend.
00:10:08:04 - 00:10:11:17
If you, as a leader in the church
space are forgetting prayer.
00:10:12:08 - 00:10:14:06
What are you not forgetting?
00:10:15:14 - 00:10:16:20
Or what are you forgetting?
00:10:16:20 - 00:10:17:06
Is that.
00:10:17:06 - 00:10:17:22
Is that what you mean?
00:10:17:22 - 00:10:20:13
No. What?
What are your priorities? Is my question.
00:10:20:13 - 00:10:20:21
Yeah.
00:10:20:21 - 00:10:23:21
If you're if you're forgetting prayer.
00:10:24:15 - 00:10:25:14
Out of all the years.
00:10:25:14 - 00:10:28:01
Don't get so boxy, though. It's happening
and people are doing.
00:10:28:01 - 00:10:30:23
I know it's happening, but
what I'm saying is you've done it before.
00:10:30:23 - 00:10:32:09
I guarantee you you've done it once.
00:10:32:09 - 00:10:35:09
Absolutely. Yeah. As have I.
00:10:35:14 - 00:10:38:11
But what I'm saying is
00:10:38:11 - 00:10:40:02
don't forget that. Yeah.
00:10:40:02 - 00:10:42:02
That's the one that you don't forget.
Yeah.
00:10:42:02 - 00:10:44:03
You don't forget that
because you're not looking at checklists.
00:10:44:03 - 00:10:44:19
You don't forget that
00:10:44:19 - 00:10:49:02
because you are ceasing without prayer
like you are or praying without ceasing.
00:10:49:02 - 00:10:50:02
You are.
00:10:50:02 - 00:10:54:23
You are a leader
that has been called by God who has the
00:10:56:01 - 00:10:59:09
spiritual awareness to lead that team.
00:10:59:10 - 00:11:01:18
Yeah. The only thing we have is prayer.
00:11:01:18 - 00:11:03:16
Don't forget prayer. I'm not trying
preaching, but.
00:11:03:16 - 00:11:04:20
Well, I think it's.
00:11:04:20 - 00:11:07:09
Put it on a checklist, I don't care.
00:11:07:09 - 00:11:07:23
Yeah, sure.
00:11:07:23 - 00:11:09:23
I'm saying we gotta hold ourselves
as leaders accountable.
00:11:09:23 - 00:11:11:11
That's the point I'm trying to make. Yeah.
00:11:11:11 - 00:11:14:01
You may think, oh, that's natural for me,
I do that.
00:11:14:01 - 00:11:16:17
Yeah, I do that every week.
00:11:16:17 - 00:11:19:15
Okay, what if you're gone
and you need to equip
00:11:19:15 - 00:11:22:23
another person on your team
to lead that weekend, right?
00:11:23:19 - 00:11:25:00
Hey, man, here's my checklist.
00:11:25:00 - 00:11:27:23
Here's the thing that I make sure. Hell
or high water.
00:11:27:23 - 00:11:28:16
I'm doing it. Yeah.
00:11:28:16 - 00:11:30:23
We make sure we pray.
We make sure we meet. We do this.
00:11:30:23 - 00:11:32:15
We go through Planning Center.
00:11:32:15 - 00:11:35:04
And like,
this isn't a matter of checking a box.
00:11:35:04 - 00:11:36:15
This is a matter of accountability.
00:11:36:15 - 00:11:38:05
Because this is so important to me. Yeah.
00:11:38:05 - 00:11:40:13
And that leader
checklist should change. Why?
00:11:40:13 - 00:11:43:11
Because it should change
on which direction the church is headed.
00:11:43:11 - 00:11:47:00
So maybe my leader is saying,
hey, we need to up our volunteerism.
00:11:47:00 - 00:11:48:19
We need to up volunteer recruitment.
00:11:48:19 - 00:11:52:15
So on my checklist for the next eight
weeks is going to be three
00:11:52:15 - 00:11:55:06
new touches, three new contacts. Right.
00:11:55:06 - 00:11:57:00
And so that that checklist for the leader
00:11:57:00 - 00:12:01:00
should be changing based off
where their leader is taking.
00:12:01:01 - 00:12:05:00
You know that you know, the the mission
or the or the strategy of the church
00:12:05:00 - 00:12:06:00
in the moment.
00:12:06:00 - 00:12:11:12
A lot less maybe technical,
you know, like an LD or an audio engineer.
00:12:11:22 - 00:12:13:01
Yeah. But absolutely.
00:12:13:01 - 00:12:14:22
You know,
something else on the leadership
00:12:14:22 - 00:12:17:22
checklist should be making sure
all positions have checklists.
00:12:17:22 - 00:12:19:00
I mean, like, yeah.
00:12:19:00 - 00:12:21:19
Does everybody have the resources
they need?
00:12:21:19 - 00:12:22:23
Do they have their checklist?
00:12:22:23 - 00:12:27:04
Do they maybe at the bottom
of their checklist it says, “go
00:12:27:04 - 00:12:31:08
around to all the stations and work areas
and making sure you see,”
00:12:31:09 - 00:12:34:15
if you want to take checklists
to the extreme, ,”making sure you see
00:12:34:16 - 00:12:38:03
initials and signatures
by those daily line items.” Yeah.
00:12:38:04 - 00:12:39:18
You know, I've been in part of church
that did that.
00:12:39:18 - 00:12:40:23
Yeah, it's pretty effective.
00:12:40:23 - 00:12:44:03
You know, at Bayside at all of our multi
00:12:44:04 - 00:12:47:03
sites for audio, something that was like
00:12:47:03 - 00:12:51:02
one of the most important
things on a checklist was gain structure.
00:12:51:06 - 00:12:55:09
And it was so important that it was
actually on the worship leaders checklist
00:12:55:12 - 00:12:57:03
to make sure that it got done. Yeah.
00:12:57:03 - 00:13:01:18
And or you know, at some campuses,
like the producer, the person
00:13:01:18 - 00:13:05:19
who's really ultimately responsible
for rehearsal and all that going well.
00:13:05:21 - 00:13:11:17
And it was it was the first question
before any anybody did anything.
00:13:11:18 - 00:13:15:22
“Hey, can we go ahead and get gains
really quick, like, because if we don't
00:13:15:22 - 00:13:19:08
do that, this whole rehearsal
is going to be in shambles.”
00:13:20:02 - 00:13:22:23
Like, we're going to be making in
ear requests the whole time.
00:13:22:23 - 00:13:25:05
Yeah. It slows everything
down, right? Yeah.
00:13:25:05 - 00:13:29:00
So it's like finding important things
like that
00:13:29:10 - 00:13:33:23
in our culture and DNA and how we execute.
00:13:34:03 - 00:13:37:03
If gain structure is not important to your
church, you're probably doing it wrong.
00:13:37:03 - 00:13:39:18
I’ll give you that pro tip, but like,
there's going to be certain things
00:13:39:18 - 00:13:42:18
that are unique to your organization
that are just incredibly important.
00:13:42:22 - 00:13:47:14
And having those things documented
00:13:48:22 - 00:13:50:19
so that you can take a vacation.
00:13:50:19 - 00:13:52:17
So that your volunteers
can take a vacation,
00:13:52:17 - 00:13:57:05
so that when that one volunteer who's
going through really hard time in life
00:13:57:14 - 00:14:00:06
has to take a couple months off,
00:14:00:06 - 00:14:02:21
you can be excited to pastor them
00:14:02:21 - 00:14:05:22
through that instead of being so pissed
that you lost your linchpin.
00:14:05:23 - 00:14:08:01
Yeah. Like, no. It's okay. Yeah, it's
all right.
00:14:08:01 - 00:14:10:19
We're going to do okay without you.
We got this documentation.
00:14:10:19 - 00:14:14:04
Also equip your people
to help you with these processes.
00:14:14:04 - 00:14:18:08
So some some people are similar to you
and I Dillan, where they're like, “Yeah,
00:14:18:10 - 00:14:22:13
I know lighting, but like,
could I create a checklist for lighting
00:14:22:18 - 00:14:26:06
that's like really what it needs
to be?” Probably not.
00:14:26:07 - 00:14:26:15
Right.
00:14:26:15 - 00:14:29:10
And so what happens
is it just doesn't happen.
00:14:30:15 - 00:14:33:05
So how do we bring in
00:14:33:05 - 00:14:37:07
some of our key volunteers
into this process as well?
00:14:37:18 - 00:14:39:17
Yeah. Go. Hey, help me do that.
00:14:39:17 - 00:14:43:04
And that's a good move for leadership
anyways because it brings in ownership,
00:14:43:04 - 00:14:44:08
buy in. Yeah.
00:14:44:08 - 00:14:47:03
Then they'll help you lead
other people accountable for checklists
00:14:47:03 - 00:14:49:02
because they,
they put time and effort towards it.
00:14:49:02 - 00:14:50:22
Yeah. Yeah.
00:14:50:22 - 00:14:53:21
Let's talk about the mechanics here. Like
00:14:54:11 - 00:14:58:05
I've seen a lot of printed out
sheets around the sanctuary.
00:14:58:06 - 00:14:59:23
I mean,
how have you done this in the past?
00:14:59:23 - 00:15:04:22
I will talk about MxU in a second
because we have a gangster way
00:15:04:22 - 00:15:06:19
to track checklists
that I want to talk about and
00:15:06:19 - 00:15:09:01
and tell you about, but, like,
how have you done this in the past?
00:15:09:01 - 00:15:09:07
Yeah.
00:15:09:07 - 00:15:10:18
I mean, simplest ground level,
00:15:10:18 - 00:15:14:18
the simplest traditional would be,
would be a clipboard and paper.
00:15:14:19 - 00:15:17:13
Yeah. And it's the same sheet printed off,
you know, a stack of 100.
00:15:17:13 - 00:15:19:20
And you just checklist for each position.
00:15:19:20 - 00:15:23:02
Right. What that does is that creates,
00:15:24:08 - 00:15:25:07
more work.
00:15:25:07 - 00:15:27:12
Yeah. You know, preparation for that.
00:15:27:12 - 00:15:29:05
And then
what are we gonna do with the paper?
00:15:29:05 - 00:15:31:23
Right. Like,
where's it go? Do we want to print paper?
00:15:31:23 - 00:15:34:05
Do we want to?
Do we want to physically write.
00:15:34:05 - 00:15:37:05
I was doing a church visit
a couple years ago,
00:15:37:15 - 00:15:40:00
and they had a QR code at every station.
00:15:40:00 - 00:15:43:00
So they would scan the QR code,
and it would be a digital checklist.
00:15:43:06 - 00:15:43:21
And that checklist
00:15:43:21 - 00:15:47:18
would just auto dump to their wherever,
you know, they're data collecting.
00:15:48:12 - 00:15:49:01
So yeah.
00:15:49:01 - 00:15:52:01
So you can go traditional route paper,
which I have no problem with.
00:15:52:01 - 00:15:57:08
You go all the way digitally to,
a QR code at station, which is slick.
00:15:57:09 - 00:15:59:14
It looks good.
They framed it up at every station.
00:15:59:14 - 00:16:01:09
“Hey, thanks for serving.” “Don't forget.
00:16:01:09 - 00:16:05:05
Scan the QR code to check in or to process
00:16:05:05 - 00:16:08:05
through your checklist.” And then also.
00:16:08:09 - 00:16:09:12
Yeah. MxU.
00:16:09:12 - 00:16:10:00
Yeah.
00:16:10:00 - 00:16:11:23
Well so I don't think
I've even told you about this.
00:16:11:23 - 00:16:16:11
So in you now you can track all your tasks
00:16:16:11 - 00:16:19:18
and checklists
like people oriented or system oriented.
00:16:19:20 - 00:16:22:04
We actually built out this
00:16:22:04 - 00:16:25:19
the functionality to obviously
you can have your repeat checklist.
00:16:25:19 - 00:16:27:15
So you have your audio checklist.
00:16:27:15 - 00:16:29:23
However maybe you got a dozen checklists.
00:16:29:23 - 00:16:31:06
You can house them all in.
00:16:31:06 - 00:16:34:11
You have them repeat
and then have them automatically assigned
00:16:34:12 - 00:16:37:08
to the person who's scheduled
in Planning Center for that position.
00:16:37:08 - 00:16:41:03
So through the Planning Center integration
you maybe you have that audio checklist
00:16:41:03 - 00:16:42:22
get assigned at Sunday at 7 a.m.
00:16:42:22 - 00:16:44:14
and I'm serving in audio.
00:16:44:14 - 00:16:45:18
I get a push notification.
00:16:45:18 - 00:16:47:19
Hey here's your checklist. Click on it.
00:16:47:19 - 00:16:49:22
I can go through
click through those items.
00:16:49:22 - 00:16:53:23
You, as my leader, can see exactly
the time that I completed those items
00:16:54:02 - 00:16:57:05
and be able to ultimately hold
the whole team accountable in one place.
00:16:57:05 - 00:16:57:23
You're not going around
00:16:57:23 - 00:17:02:01
chasing paper you're not worrying about,
but it's like automatic.
00:17:02:02 - 00:17:04:00
Turnkey. We're super pumped about it.
00:17:04:00 - 00:17:09:06
This has been like a really strangely
hot topic with churches lately.
00:17:09:06 - 00:17:12:07
They're just like,
how do I manage these weekend processes?
00:17:12:07 - 00:17:17:10
And being able to do this in
an automated way and be able to digitize.
00:17:17:11 - 00:17:20:17
I mean, come on, we're in 2026
printing out paper.
00:17:20:18 - 00:17:23:00
Yeah, I know for
checklists is a little bit ridiculous.
00:17:23:00 - 00:17:26:10
I know so but but but must not neglect
00:17:26:10 - 00:17:29:11
the fact that there are still
thousands of churches that
00:17:30:16 - 00:17:32:16
it would just be easier to print paper.
00:17:32:16 - 00:17:36:16
Well, and what we find is that
a lot of people will have the paper there.
00:17:36:21 - 00:17:38:15
You can see it like the tape.
00:17:38:15 - 00:17:39:16
Yeah, around the edges.
00:17:39:16 - 00:17:41:17
And it's just there
and no one's actually checking it off.
00:17:41:17 - 00:17:43:15
It's almost like a reminders list.
00:17:43:15 - 00:17:45:17
But again accountability. Right.
00:17:45:17 - 00:17:48:22
Because how many times
I hear this all the time.
00:17:48:23 - 00:17:50:00
Oh yeah. “We normally do that.
00:17:50:00 - 00:17:53:16
We just we just didn't do it today.”
A reminder list is better than nothing,
00:17:54:07 - 00:17:57:10
but it still is not accomplishing
what it exists for.
00:17:57:11 - 00:17:58:03
Let's go back to you
00:17:58:03 - 00:18:02:08
talking about airline pilots,
highly paid, skilled professionals. Yes.
00:18:02:09 - 00:18:03:19
With lives on the line. Yeah.
00:18:03:19 - 00:18:05:19
You could say, oh, well,
it's just, you know,
00:18:05:19 - 00:18:08:21
bunch of red tape, cause Delta Airlines
micromanaging their pilots or whatever.
00:18:08:22 - 00:18:12:20
No. Like,
even I have a friend who's a private pilot
00:18:12:20 - 00:18:17:04
and he's like, no, I take pride in like,
my job.
00:18:17:08 - 00:18:21:11
And I also know that I'm human and
I forget that, no, like, I need to be able
00:18:21:14 - 00:18:25:10
to have accountability here
and know exactly when this thing got done.
00:18:25:11 - 00:18:28:09
I don't know why
I ran across this yesterday.
00:18:28:09 - 00:18:30:15
TikTok, of course, but Chernobyl.
00:18:31:19 - 00:18:32:21
Is that not a thing.
00:18:32:21 - 00:18:33:22
We don't do that anymore or something?
00:18:33:22 - 00:18:37:07
No, I just, I, I didn't realize
I thought that was a little young for you.
00:18:37:08 - 00:18:40:08
Oh really what what's the age range? Just.
00:18:40:14 - 00:18:42:19
Hayden. What's the age range for TikTok?
00:18:42:19 - 00:18:45:17
Yeah, like like as a 38 year old dude,
I shouldn’t be on TikTok?
00:18:45:17 - 00:18:47:14
No, I feel it's very wide range.
00:18:47:14 - 00:18:47:23
Okay.
00:18:47:23 - 00:18:50:15
It's more prevalent
20 to 30 year old, but.
00:18:50:15 - 00:18:53:03
Yeah. My grandmother is on TikTok.
00:18:53:03 - 00:18:55:14
Dude, I was laughing so hard
last night on TikTok.
00:18:55:14 - 00:18:59:01
Your grandma's on TikTok,
but your grandma is a little hip, though.
00:18:59:01 - 00:19:02:21
She's a little – my grandma’s dead.
00:19:02:23 - 00:19:04:12
38 year old, you know.
00:19:04:12 - 00:19:08:19
And Chernobyl in Ukraine.
00:19:08:19 - 00:19:11:19
The fallen out, the nuclear fallout,
00:19:12:04 - 00:19:13:13
lack of checklist.
00:19:13:13 - 00:19:16:00
They did not go through their checklist.
00:19:16:00 - 00:19:18:02
It was human error and a checklist.
00:19:18:02 - 00:19:20:15
Failure is what led to that disaster.
00:19:20:15 - 00:19:24:10
So if you're listening to this,
you're heading down a road of straight
00:19:25:03 - 00:19:26:14
nuclear fallout.
00:19:26:14 - 00:19:30:12
Contamination in your ministry
for hundreds of years.
00:19:30:14 - 00:19:31:11
Yeah, yeah.
00:19:31:11 - 00:19:33:02
But checklists are important.
00:19:33:02 - 00:19:36:02
It's not just it's it's not just for the
00:19:36:04 - 00:19:40:02
the delta pilot
or the nuclear scientist. It's
00:19:41:07 - 00:19:43:18
it's you say nuclear.
00:19:43:18 - 00:19:45:15
Nuclear.
00:19:45:15 - 00:19:47:17
How would you say it? Nuclear.
00:19:47:17 - 00:19:48:16
That's that's what I said.
00:19:48:16 - 00:19:50:02
Nuclear.
00:19:50:02 - 00:19:51:06
Nuclear.
00:19:51:06 - 00:19:53:10
Is that better?
00:19:53:10 - 00:19:54:14
Nuclear.
00:19:54:14 - 00:19:57:14
That's how you said it.
00:19:57:21 - 00:19:58:07
Oh, man.
00:19:58:07 - 00:20:00:22
I just realized you
and I both are wearing integration hats.
00:20:00:22 - 00:20:02:17
I know, I thought the same thing.
00:20:02:17 - 00:20:05:21
It's like earlier I was like,
battle of the integration companies.
00:20:05:22 - 00:20:06:15
I love it.
00:20:06:15 - 00:20:11:01
Yeah, neither of us are integrators,
but we we like the good ones.
00:20:11:02 - 00:20:13:18
Yeah, the good ones are just their worth.
00:20:13:18 - 00:20:15:08
I love this
mainly because I like this hat,
00:20:15:08 - 00:20:18:10
but also Summit Integrated does good work
and many integrators,
00:20:18:11 - 00:20:20:17
you've heard us say,
many integrators don't do good work.
00:20:20:17 - 00:20:23:02
So yeah. Yeah.
00:20:23:02 - 00:20:24:23
That's
how you know which integrator to go with.
00:20:24:23 - 00:20:27:22
Just if you ever see
a hat of the integrator on the MxU
00:20:27:22 - 00:20:30:04
podcast, there you go.
00:20:30:04 - 00:20:31:19
I really like this hat.
00:20:31:19 - 00:20:34:02
Yeah. Amplio Systems.
I stole it from here.
00:20:34:02 - 00:20:35:09
Oh, really? Yeah.
00:20:35:09 - 00:20:35:22
Well, that's the thing.
00:20:35:22 - 00:20:37:18
See, they send us hats,
so we got a bunch of hats
00:20:37:18 - 00:20:40:04
they know, like, okay,
if we send MxU a hat.
00:20:40:04 - 00:20:40:14
Smart.
00:20:40:14 - 00:20:43:03
So far, it's just Churchfront,
Amplio, and Summit.
00:20:43:03 - 00:20:46:01
Yeah, but hopefully we'll get some more.
00:20:46:01 - 00:20:47:18
Now we will. Yeah, yeah. For sure.
00:20:47:18 - 00:20:48:12
Please.
00:20:48:12 - 00:20:51:09
Well, hey,
thanks for joining us on the MxU podcast.
00:20:51:09 - 00:20:54:00
Hopefully this has been helpful discussion
for you.
00:20:54:00 - 00:20:58:01
If you want to learn more,
even just about like MQ checklists
00:20:58:01 - 00:21:01:05
and how that can help your ministry,
there's a link in the description below.
00:21:01:05 - 00:21:02:06
Would love to meet with you.
00:21:02:06 - 00:21:05:08
Show you a little bit more in depth
of how how it could work and serve
00:21:05:08 - 00:21:06:12
you and your team.
00:21:06:12 - 00:21:08:09
Yeah. Thanks for joining us.
00:21:08:09 - 00:21:10:06
We'll see you next time on the podcast.
